All that Glitters is not Gold

The Merchant of Venice - William Shakespeare

The doll is of Portia in an Elizabethan-esque costume. The story goes that there are 3 men vying for her hand in marriage. Her father issues a challenge. The suitor must chose from a set of 3 cases, one containing gold, one containing silver and one containing lead as to which one has most value. If they chose right, they get to marry Portia. If they chose wrongly they must live out their lives as bachelors. The correct case, is the case full of lead, because as a merchant this is of most value, not the objects that look like they have most value, hence the statement "All that glitters is not gold"
