Self Esteem and Counter Culture

And so, here is the reason why my self confidence regarding personal preference of likes and dislikes is so low you couldn't even get an atom between it and rock bottom.

Bullies didn't do this to me. My friends did.

It took me a long time to learn that it's ok if you like Popular things, as well as quirky online things. However online culture, and counterculture has a habit of being rude and nasty about the type of people who like popular things and it can leave you feeling a little upset inside because these people who you like and admire, be they friends or role models, are telling you that you're stupid, or dumb, or a moron, because you did the ultimate sin and liked something they find lower than dirt, and so you must be lower than dirt too? Right?

Yes Twilight as a technical novel, and perhaps even from some feminist perspectives is not a very good book. But that doesn't give you license to mock and put down people who like Twilight. Or the X Factor. Or some other popular thing you've decided you hate.

It's also ok for you to dislike it. I'm cool with that too.

Jokes with a light hearted twist are alright, I'm all for laughing at the world, but talking down to people for a entertainment preference that's not as high brow as your Pride and Prejudice or your Dracula is pretty unattractive.

We all do it, make comments about stuff we dislike and the people who like them, but perhaps as an online society, oft made up of people who have been bullied or feel ostracised from "normal" people, we're the ones who should be empathetic and open minded, not even nastier so people feel they have nowhere to turn.

I don't like Twilight. But if you like it then you're a wonderful human being, you go watch those films or read those novels and enjoy it.

Also pop music is catchy, even if it's auto-tuned and manufactured. I <3 it.

Reminds me of the negative reactions I initially received from friends when I was reading the Twilight series. It can make you uncomfortable and , especially if you have low self esteem, it can be intimidating a bit to stand up for your likes. I like how you made it a positive message in your description and the piece captures that sort of moment really well. Nice work, honestly.
