Opera Costume - Agrippine by FionaCreates Opera Costume - Agrippine by FionaCreates
More of an exercise than a proper drawing.

Within dolling I have always found it easy to construct material and make it appear the texture and flow that I want it to be, but I have had issues with it in the land of drawing. So when OrnamentedBeing posted some fabulous Opera Costumes I fell in love with this one and had to draw it.

In a way it's just a giant doll really.. XD

Thanks :D This was a study excercise designed for me to make the clothes feel believable so I'm glad you think it looks like you could touch it ^_^

You interpreted it very well and created the perfect model for it! I could tell the eggplant part was velvety before I looked at the reference.

Even though it's an old dress I wanted my drawing to feel contemporary, hence the hairstyle and such of the model, instead of something pulled back and traditionally opera. My own stamp as it were.

And yes I'm v happy with how all the textures turned out, esp considering it's a technical exercise and that was the point. Now I just need to figure out a proper illustration with which to use these new found skillz XD

I love these kind of dresses! They're so beautiful  and elegant, I wish they'd come back in fashion. You did a really nice job, I love the color scheme. Green, gold and red are the best combo, and I love the shades you chose! I love this!

I cannot take credit for the colour scheme I'm afraid :P This pic is just a case of monkey see monkey do as a learning picture. But I did learn a lot. I'm glad you like the drawing ^^

This is gorgeous! The colors in this piece are so rich and deep! I love the contrast between her chocolate dark skin and the deep green of her dress. Also, the shimmer of light, is wonderful, really makes it look like velvet. :D Also, this makes me crave mint/chocolate chip ice-cream something fierce. :shifty:

I saw a thing on BBC news a week or so ago about Pretty Yende the opera singer, and when I decided to draw this historical costume and had to come up with a person to put in it, I thought Pretty Yende would look fabulous in it (or a close approximation to her anyway XD). Turns out I was right :P

Haha, you must've had fun on this one...funny thing is upon first glance before I read your description I really thought how this one reminded me of your dolls, just bigger. XD
This is the kind of thing I did before I started dolling, drawing pretty fashion/costume designs, but that was years ago. :P It's nice to see you do stuff like this from time to time.

I have issues with material on my larger drawings so I decided to just do something simple and all about the material as opposed to a proper illustrations. Then I can take what I learned and put it into my illustrations.

That's perfectly logical! I always struggle with texture when it's on a larger scale, but I like how you used "squiggly lines" to give the impression that it's velvet. I tend to zoom in on your drawings, I always learn from you by zooming in on certain details, especially when it baffles me how you did it. :P

Thanks :D I picked this one for practice because it has the velvet, the solid feeling corset and the loose flowing skirt, lots of practice, that and it's a beautiful costume. Glad you like how the velvet is working, means I succeeded :D
