Modern Pocahontas by FionaCreates Modern Pocahontas by FionaCreates
When I saw the Disney Princess Pageant's first round was modernising a princess I couldn't resist. I really love the drawing style that was used in pocahontas so I thought I'd take Pocahontas as a modern native american girl. The round stated that I had to have elements from the original costume, so I stole her tattoo and necklace, along with the one shoulder and bare feet, and added some of the original trimming etc to the bag.

I'm quite happy with how she turned out :D Enjoy!

IS SHE A HIPPIE IN THE MODEN DAYS?

I'm thinking something like yes, I see her as a university student, somewhere like Harvard or something super clever, and wandering around barefoot and challenging people's perception of the world, like she does in the disney movie. Not an angry person like "omg you're so mean because you eat meat"

I thought that is something in that way. Also beacause you drawn her barefooted and with those pants.

I also thought based on the original disney design she ought to remain barefoot. :P

XD Well the nose is copied from her film nose so thank disney for that epicness of getting rid of the cure little button princess nose.

Yes, but pixelling it is not always that easy.

I actually love Pocahontas because I am part American Indian. My grandfather looked just like her father in the movie.

For me I've always loved the visual style, because they accepted the vast differences in human appearance, but not in a cutesy cariacatury way, but by really playing to the angular Native American face, and all that. The one thing I really admire about disney is their ability to simplify their designs and clothing down yet retain the look of it being full of details. I also adore the pocahontas music too. I mean that opening scene where it starts with the english on the boat, and fades into the native american singing... heaven! XD

I don't know thing one about Virginia reservations but she'd fit in perfectly on the Rez in Montana (we have several; just pick one). And probably Arizona, too.

Being british it was difficult to find internet research on contemporary native americans so she was designed a bit generic but its nice to know I got it right and she'd fit in somewhere in the US if not virginia lol.

I know.... *L* I love all the details you kept from the film, like her single shoulder strap and her tattoo. It's really well done. :) And the colors are just right.

Thanks :D The challenge was to make them modern, but keeping elements of their original design, so not just suddenly putting them in any clothes you like. So I thought she'd be a little bit of a rebel, tearing up t shirts and tying them up to look like what she wants etc, and tattoed of course :P

i was just gonna fave this and not comment but that's a dick move that i hate so,
dude, i totally love her face. it's spot-on for the animated character and her whole stance still demands the same kind of power. and them jeans, mmmmm. i have a soft spot for well-done jeans.

I don't plan anything that isn't relevant, knowing a little backstory about who they are as a person means you can inform the fashion sense they have, the body language, facial expressions etc. It goes far beyong "she's sad so I shall give her sad face" and "that's a pretty dress I'll make my doll wear it". A lot of the stuff I doll isn't clothes I personally would wear, or find pretty, simply what I think the character would find pretty.

I imagine her as some sort of passive agressive eco warrior, like petitioning to save the wilderness, but not agressively tying yourself to trees and all that XD

And John Smith is the cool football player who laughs at saving the planet but then changes his mind as he gets to know her XD

damn I think too much XD
