I agree, it comes and goes with the next big thing, but it's nice to settle rather than play 'catch-up' with the rest of the crowd, because to me, it's frustrating. :/
I don't mind lots of fanart for something in the cinema or new out on TV, it's an expression of fan love, but it often feels like people are just going along with the crowd than seriously making nice pictures.
artistic priciples of shape, tone, colour and texture are universal. Once you understand them transfering them from one media to the next is pretty easy. I don't really see it as being any different to what I usually make only the tools I used were different. Same as if I painted or drew it instead.
But I'm not telling that pixel art principles are different from the tool one. I'm telling about adaptation. For me, accostumed with pixel platform, wasn't so easy take the right way of tool ones. But considering that you used Gimp, full of layers and help-tools, it wasn't so different Again, your doll is amazing, and I really liked it!
I didn't actually make use of the layers when I pixelled this beyond having my sketch on one layer and the pixel on another. Compared to when I tool and I can get up to 40 layers if I'm being layer happy that day.
