The first in a series of tutorials intended to help people with the little things that make a pixel doll pageant entry that might have just a couple of good dolls into something that's really something to rave about.

GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. THEY LOOK NOTHING ALIKE.

I am going to sound like a total n00b (but I've always wanted to give this a try!) but what is DHF stand for? ^^;

Very informative, though - things I, as a beginner, would definitely overlook, but I can definitely see where you are coming from, especially with the skin colors! That would irk me to no end, to see something claimed as the same character, but being so drastically different in personality and skin tone~

DHF is Doll on the Hill Factory. It's a doll website gallery of the doller Suzy [link] she makes a base called Moe that's very popular among dollers who enter doll pageants.

Hmm. Thank you for the enlightening information on dolling pageants. I never knew there was so much to them. Well, mainly because I've neither entered them or seen one actually, lol.

Weeeeeeee! Are you gunna make one talking about sticker effect and why its bad in different colors?

:iconfionacreates:
FionaCreates Featured By Owner Aug 1, 2008  Professional General Artist
totally, when I get to typography there will be a loooooong talk about text that you can't read cos it's too fancy, or the colour matches the background so you can't see it or they stick a sticker on a doll when it's not a stylistic choice but a necessity born because they were too silly to think about colour beforehand.

I know that for text, I sit a long time trying to find something that will make, yet pull off the character. While at the same time, the font legible.

Matching is wonderful when it comes to any art work, pixeling or not. No matter what kind of skills someone has, its how well things match and work well they work together that's important. If something looks out of place, its never good. Unless it's suppose to look out of place.

Very good points here pyro I totally agree with you allot of people miss the idea of matching the bases... I personally try to match the faces also and find it somthing rather rewarding to do as the doll can look more in your own style.

Very good read would love to read more <3

These are all very good points, I'm sure everyone will find them very useful.
A lot of that might not even occur to people, so its good to remind us all.

yeah, when people use a font where I can't actually read the character's country/name or a colour that you can't see on the background, or even worse add a sticker to disguise how bad it looks on the background or because they've used a glow or something XD

Wonderful tutorial, Pyro! Definitely hits some important points. I've been dolling for 8 years, but I'm still not confident in my ability to redo facial features. Something I definitely need to work on if I want to get better!

I can't wait to see your next installment in this tutorial series.

Thanks :D Editing faces is best to start with just editing what's there. Admittedly I redrew the face cos I'm comfier with doing that, but simply moving pixels, or making the nose stand out more (which is flaw I find in moe, her lack of much nose) it all ads up then one day you'll notice you are redrawing the entire thing now XD

whoo~ I liked it -- I think this tutorial is a great tip not only for pageant dolls but all dolls alike. The importance of base edits is just overly ignored sometimes :)

Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Excellent advice there, and it's very true. From what I see, nothing kills a pageant entry more than an unedited Moe face. Even changing the eye color makes a difference.

heehee. It all starts with a base. I was actually planning to put all my pageant advice in one tutorial but it turns out I have too much advice so there will be a series of tutorials XD

thanks for the comment and yes unedited moe faces kill pageants. And no just putting on a lick of make up or using fainelloth's face doesn't help, then it's just an unedited moe with black eyelids, or green eyelids or whatever.

Besides, face edits are incredibly fun to do. And they're a lot easier than people may think.

yeah, especially if you just move a bit of what's there, it doesn't always mean changing the whole thing.

I especially like the more unconventional edits, such as defining the nose or making the eyebrows thicker. Some may think that it would make the doll look ugly, but it actually achieves the opposite effect. Unless, of course, it goes overboard.

yeah though I am in the habit of just loping off the head of the base and redrawing it XD
