Contraption by FionaCreates Contraption by FionaCreates
Edit - Thanks so much for the DD. Totally unexpected! Thank you for all the watches and favs.

Here's a photo of her as she is today, hanging on my wall reminding me sometimes crazy ideas can work - [link]

For the Illustration Friday topic Contraption.

I got carried away with not only drawing a contraption (or in this case corsets and crinolines) but turning the drawing itself into a contraption.

Drawn in ink, scanned, printed onto thicker paper, cut out and assembled.

The assembly involved stinging a bead on both sides of the hole because I didn't want to use split pins and get little bronze discs everywhere.

For anyone who might want a high res file (with instructions :P) please get in touch. As it's black and white you could colour it in yourself, either digitally before printing, or with crayons or paints after printing. (Cost of high res file $5)

Contraption by `Pyrochan-dolls The suggester writes: This piece is both inventive and fun. The ink work and level of detail stand on their own, but when made into a doll (with careful consideration given to the joints) it becomes all the more impressive. Thanks :D I wanted her to contrast the sad mournful looks most jointed dolls have and be strong and willful instead.

Thank you :D It's a byproduct of wanting to make my own jointed doll with my style and not having the skills for that so doing it out of paper instead XD

Thank yee :D I'm working on another one as a super secret project for a friend not on dA (or at least I hope she's not reading this)

It seems to work well for steampunk because of the mechanical nature of it.

It's quite a simple concept as to how it's put together. Though it was harder than I thought getting all the limbs the same length XD

you have an enchanted doll?! goddammit I'm jealous.

I don't have an interest in BJD as a whole, because tbh most of them are rather samey, esp the japanese import ones they're just slightly creepy XD but Marina's are so full of life and her own ideas and influences, and not just a copy of other peoples ideas and influences.

So Jealous :P

Eh, I've got a stroke of luck, I guess. As you were saying, I don't have much interest in bjd in general, but somehow I am completely obsessed by Marina's work. So much art and thought go into each of them, the attention to details is so keen, that I could not help but fall in love with them. I wish I could get another one, but the chances are very very very slim at this point! Should be content of owning one, really...;)

What Marina does with her work is what any great artist does. They consolidate all the things that interest them and combine them into something new. It's like, if you're a dollmaker, other than for technical hints, don't look at other dolls, look at classic art, or whatever inspires you, but the dolls would influence too heavily. Marina's work is highly influenced by her Russian background and less by what people expect dolls to be. She's always being new and interesting. I mean that Chandaleer hat thing she recently made, pure genius. It's more like fashion than dolls. The kind of thing you'd see on the catwalk. Can't praise her enough XD

And thanks for the link. She's lovely and it just makes me even more jealous :P I made a wire jointed doll for myself, but there's a lot I'd love to improve about her [link] [link] (including my crappy photography skillz XD) That's about the closest I'll get to an Enchanted doll XD Tbh in a way I like her better because she's mine XD Despite all her flaws.

I wanted a short hairstyle so it wouldn't interfere with her clothes when her hair moved. It's quite by accident the first hairstyle I tried looked best.

Indeed. I don't mind the "someone stole my kitten" eyes, but the "on the virge of crying" face is just a but redundant So my steampunk girl will be stealing your kittenz, not losing them.
