So It's been nearly 6 months since I started Roller Derby (from scratch without even the ability to stand upright on skates without falling on my arse!)
I've been skating on some entry level skates since December but a few days ago I finally received my big girl derby skates! Aren't they fabulous!? They skate like magic in comparison to my entry skates, as they should of course!
I'm only about 4 skills off getting my Minimum Skills test pass, and I've been scrimmaging with my team for just over a month now, so I'll very soon be eligible to play for B team bouts, which is terrifying and exciting all at once. (Though my new skates have totally destroyed my ability to stop! Need to relearn that ASAP!)
I have a derby name and a team number and shockingly actually have some leg muscles! (Fiona Bruce is a british ex newsreader and current antiques roadshow presenter for those who miss the pun cos you're not british...)
Though I have been a little artistically absent lately but I have been sketching a lot more just finishing a lot less personal work (you can find me posting a lot of sketches on tumblr
) as it's been a learning curve to balance sport and art where previously there was just art because I was a bit of a couch lump! I'm hoping to get some new stuff done soon however (turn those sketches into something productive!).
It's been a crazy but exciting 6 months and I think I've seen more of the North of the UK following the A team about than I have ever seen before! (see the above photo at South Shields Beach) So here's to the next 6 months!
I hope you're all fabulous too and that you've been up to fun and productive things in the past 6 months too!
